Question

Why can’t the ThinkServer Configurator connect to ThinkServer after installing any HotFix on Windows 2008/Vista?

Answer

When launching ThinkServer as a service, a popup interactive window that blocks the execution of the service is not visible to the user and therefore it is not possible to continue the launch. Windows 2008 has many security restrictions that may lead to unexpected behavior in ThinkServer.

Workaround

To diagnose the issue, first run ThinkServer as an application (execute l2manager.bat in the ThinkServer folder) and verify whether there is an interactive window asking for permissions to execute a .bat file.

If this is the case you can either:

  • change the owner of the application that needs permissions to System, or the administrator, or
  • rename the .bat that needs permissions to the fileName_back.bat, edit the .bat as administrator and save it as fileName.bat (which will create a new file with admin as the owner), and run again to check there is no interactive window for this specific .bat
